Does Outsourcing Location Matter For Success Of Software Development?

Software projects outsourcing, in particular offshore software outsourcing, can be very cost-efficient for your company. Another added benefit is also that these software outsourcing agencies have a comprehensive portfolio. These services can cater to your companies wide range of needs. It could be either during the middle of the product development cycle or even after the product release. They possess the necessary expertise to ensure that you end up with the best product for your company.

What do you mean by the outsourcing of software? What are the different types of software outsourcing?

In simple terms, software development outsourcing is an arrangement.  Here an external software development company or agency carries out the entire project. You would have to hand over control of the process to this third-party vendor. Different models are present for software outsourcing. There are three main models, offshore, on-shore and near-shore.

  1. Offshore Software Outsourcing

The word offshore means that you would be working with a team of developers in another country. This is a very appealing model for many companies as it is the more cost-effective option. This is due to the labor costs in other countries. Also, online communication channels have evolved over the years, making them very convenient. For example, zoom meetings and emails.

  1. On-shore Software Outsourcing

This model refers to when your company would work with a software development team in the same country. There are two advantages to this model. First, being in the same country would mean there is likely to be no language barrier. And second, the time difference is not so great to cause any hindrance in your work. But there is no cost-benefit that you would see as the labor cost would be the same.

  1. Near-shore Software Outsourcing

This model is a kind of mixture of both the above models. Here the developer’s team or agency would be in the neighboring country to you. This kind of model would have the benefit of a closer time difference.

This article will shed some light on where to outsource software development and whether the outsourcing location plays a role in the outcome of the project or not.

When you expand your search market and are looking for a software outsourcing company, you’ll have to access these agencies in a much more broad sense. There will have to be more categories than just pure talent that you will have to look into.

The evolution of collaboration tools has changed the way companies can now work. Everything does not have to be in-house anymore. You can be working with a team in San Francisco while you are in New York without any problem.

There are great benefits that come from working with a company which is specialized in software development. The work that they do is much more streamlined, and two, they are more efficient. But that it is important to remember that not all software outsourcing models are the same. You need to pick the right one for your company. The software outsourcing model that worked for your competition doesn’t need to work for you as well.

While working with the software development agency, the engagement model matters. The company must get you the product you imagined and bring it to the market fast.

Following are the five main categories you need to look into while selecting a company to outsource your software development to:

  1. Is the developer’s team that you plan to outsource responsive and reachable?

The software development project is a crucial part of the success of your company. You need to make sure whether the agency you work with is reachable to you or not. You can test the waters on this front by seeing how they handle the negotiations and the initial few meetings. They will be on their best behavior during this period, but you will still get a sense of whether your time difference will be an issue or not. Find out if they can have a weekly standup meeting. This will help in the communication, and also, you will be able to check the progress of the project.

  1. The ability of real-time communication between the two.

This is adding to the first point of having real-time communion as an option. Check whether the agency is comfortable with the use of technology such as zoom or google meets. It is important to use these tools to build a relationship between your company and theirs. A relationship that is simply just not built on sending emails back and forth.

  1. Whether there is a cultural fit with the software development company?

When you hire anyone for your company, you always check if they fit your company culture. Consider the same principle here. When you align your principles together, you can work well with each other.

  1. Will there be any tools in place to support the distributed software development?

There should be tools and other strategies to make sure that the team is well organized and informed to manage the product development. Another point to remember is that everyone on the team should know how to use such tools. This is something you need to cover before you start the project with the developers.

  1. What kind of approach do the developers follow?

You need to check and see what kind of approach they follow and whether it is flexible or not. Agile Project Management is a good approach and is designed to be flexible. This allows the product development team to adapt to any kind of complex or changing situation.

The precise application of Agile may vary depending on the company. So pick a company with some experience and whose developers can adapt to any specific workflow.

You’ll find that the longer you work with the software development agency, the better the workflow. Once you have established a strong foundation with them, the more natural the development process becomes. More than the location, it is picking the right people to work with. The perspective and process followed by the company and their developers matters most.
